Watch Dogs 2 – in depth review

What is the best open-world third-person real life simulation game set in our days? Most of the people would say GTA V. I strongly disagree. Watch Dogs 2 is the best open-world game to date, and by a big margin too. What defines a good open world game? A big map to free roam around, shooting random people and running from the cops? That’s how it used to be, until Watch Dogs came into the scene.

Let’s talk about what makes this game so amazing and great, and why in my opinion it is the best open-world-third-person real life simulation game today:

  • Relevant story: Watch Dogs is a game that really delivers a message. In these days, the internet has a bigger influence on us than everyone can fathom. Freedom is dying and the always-connected personal devices are violating our privacy in every single aspect possible. Watch Dogs portrays exactly how frightening it really is and that we should retaliate as fast as possible, otherwise the world will be doomed. Ubisoft has changed the ending of the game after the fans have roared over the internet and it’s for the better too. I remember, last summer, when I have completed the game on PC, the ending felt very close to Mass Effect’s 3, in terms that it was disappointing, rushed, not thought through and not in tune at all with the awesomeness that the game delivered until the end. Now the game has a positive final and it’s quite and joyful one too.
  • Stunning graphics: This game looks fantastic, the characters look crisp, the world leaves you breathless at times and combined with great shooting and hacking mechanics, it is easily, one of the greatest games ever made. Customization is at its home too with about seven stores to buy a great amount of clothing items from, two car dealerships that offer a big variety of paintings for your purchased car or bike.
  • Strong characters: Even though Watch Dogs 2 only has one protagonist, Marcus a.k.a. Retr0 felt perfect for the role because he’s smart, charismatic and fearless, all the traits of a strong leader, which he proves to be, helping his crew (DedSec) achieve their ultimate goal, shutting down Blume. The DedSec crew are also interesting with strong personalities and unique traits, although it would have been even more awesome if they had participated in the missions by more than just guiding Marcus through intercoms. As the story is focused on destroying giant companies like NVite(in-game version of Facebook), Nudle(in-game version of Google, and ultimately Blume(the company that owns them all, Ct-OS(the tech that makes all the surveillance possible, I don’t know such a company in real life), antagonists or villains aren’t as strong. There is a well-known hacker, which has also unforgettable features and skills and finally the CTO of Blume) and other than that there are no bad guys, as the game is focused on the corporations.
  • Open-to-hacking San Francisco: A beautiful world to experience the story into, Watch Dogs’ version of San Francisco is unbelievable. Beautiful landscapes, beautiful real-life renderings of buildings and places, adds to the joy of being able to hack people, cars, traffic lights, police, gangs, city infrastructures like steam pipes, cranes and so much more. The people you meet on the street have an identity and are hackable too, either by stealing their money from their bank account or reading their messages, or listening to their conversations, or calling the cops or the gangs on them, or all of the hacks at the same time, the people make San-Franciso feel the most alive open-world game ever.
  • Well thought side-missions and collectibles: No more “fixers” and “crimes” that distracted the player from the open-world as it was in the first Watch Dogs, this time around, there are plenty more to choose from and the player decides when to do them and whether to do them or not at all. One example is Driver San Francisco (the in-game version of Uber) is a fun activity to do as the missions are so diverse, by either having to drive slower or faster, or without any damage, or to complete jumps and stunts for live-audiences on YouTube. There are plenty of collectibles too, money bags, skill points, clothing items, rare cars and more than not only are adding strength and potential to the protagonist of the game, but are in themselves, little riddles that take time to solve and are very satisfying. Visit all of the San-Francisco for check-ins and get too see the beautiful world that this game has too offer and get some achievements on the side too.
  • A very rewarding experience: Finish a main mission, get 40 gamerscore, finish a side-mission, get another 40, and for me as well as may other players, feels great and only makes us to do more and more. There are funny and interesting achievements to unlock too, like (take a picture of a person throwing up, or call the cops on the donut-dressed guy) and the Watch Dogs 2 experience becomes a blast. That’s how the achievement-hunging starts and unknowingly takes about 50 hours to complete the main story, all of the side-missions and get the majority of collectibles.

Concluding, the last eight days that have been filled by Watch Dogs 2 for me were simply amazing. This game gives me so much joy that it seems stupid for me to try play anything else. But, unfortunately it’s almost complete, as I left the last collectibles (the data keys) for sometime later, when I would want to play it again and have an objective to complete. For now, I would like to say a huge thanks to Ubisoft for creating and delivering the best open-world game ever and that I can not wait to play the next iteration, which as rumors say it will be placed in London and WOW that sounds tremendous!
